Tobias Zuberbühler

Tobias Zuberbühler has over 25 years of experience in dispute resolution and has acted as arbitrator and counsel in more than 90 international and domestic arbitration proceedings under various rules (ICC, Swiss Rules, DIS, CEPANI, VIAC, HKIAC). He has also rendered over 350 UDRP decisions as WIPO Domain Name Panelist.

Tobias is a member of the Arbitration Court of the Swiss Arbitration Centre, co-editor of the Commentary on the Swiss Rules of International Arbitration (3rd ed 2023) and co-author of a leading commentary on the IBA Rules of Evidence. He is recommended by Who’s Who Legal as one of the world’s foremost practitioners in international arbitration (Thought Leaders – Arbitration 2025).

After 17 years as partner in an arbitration/litigation boutique, Tobias Zuberbühler has started his own practice as independent arbitrator in order to focus more on his arbitrator work.

Tobias graduated from the University of Zurich Law School (lic. iur.) and holds an LL.M. degree in International Legal Studies from Golden Gate University, San Francisco. He is fluent in German, English (7 years USA) and French.

BAND – Coroner

Album – Dissonance Theory

My dear friends and music lovers, this months’ album might only please a small and deadly fraction, but all metal heads will rejoice and try headbanging in a ⅞th beat:

I present the thrash metal band Coroner from Zurich with their new album Dissonance Theory. A metal album on cognitive dissonance? Hell yeah. Created in 1984, the band produced five studio albums between 1987 and 1993, only to disappear until 2011 (when they played a few concerts) and finally issue the current album 32 years (!) after the last. 

For those of you who still think that metal is unbearable noise, listen closely: Thommy Vetterli  is considered one of the best guitar players in the world (by the likes of Sepultura’s Max Cavalera). Stephan Eicher (!) is a fan and sees elements of Ravel and Debussy. The music of Coroner is extremely versatile with elements of jazz (hence the ⅞th beat in earlier recordings), the lyrics are interesting, and the entire mix a revelation.

Big concession: I was never a metal fan during my youth and found the kids with their Iron Maiden stickers on jeans jackets rather silly, but after some initiation by good friends who played in metal bands (and some memorable concerts), the thunder hit a soft spot in my solar plexus. 

This is music you need to physically absorb, by high volume. The fans are the most faithful and loving people rock music has ever experienced, and the development into sub-genres is endless and constantly evolving. While I do not like some styles (such as folk metal which has remained rather puerile, or ballads, even worse) and combinations with other fields do not work in my opinion (the worst combination being metal and classical music, argh), metal is authentic and cathartic. What more can you ask for?

Coroner’s new album is overwhelming and another example of a Swiss band at its peak – tune in to the beast.
